Description
An exercise in the reigning in of power and bulk. It’s impressive because it defies the connotations that we attach to certain forms. It manages to tether down and strap together two huge obelisks and somehow form them into something that appears elegant and perhaps even delicate. Not delicate like a flower, or like glass. Delicate in respect to the way in which the piece is balanced. The simple geometrical shape is pleasing to the eye, throwing nods to modern architecture and trying to emphasise the beauty of the outside, inside. After all you’re essentially bringing a cliff face into your home. The two behemoths are laid flat on their backs and forced up against each other. There’s a suggestion of a slight give, a compromise between the two in the diagonal line that runs just off parallel to the table sides. It’s this small detail that prevents this piece from seeming too blockish and lends a certain elegance to the table. One is cast from Oak Veneer, flat and simple, protruding from the side of its slightly larger sibling. The larger of the two is certainly the more ostentatious being carved form a solid chunk of Nero Marquina marble. The two are harnessed and held together by the thick brass ring that runs up one side, across the table top and down the other.
