It is a rare and wonderful experience when a piece of design physically draws you in through its visual play and its alluring materials. The Esme bar chair plays whimsical tricks on our sense of sight and touch, combining contrasting shapes and materials into a magnificent spectacle. Designed to take centre-stage at any bar or dining area, it is bound to draw attention and provide a base for long nights of conversation. Forget the top for now, let’s start with the base. Made out of four lusciously finished, black lacquered wood legs that taper inwards as they move towards the back of the back of the structure the piece, tunnel-like visually drags us into its world. At which point the central feature, the expertly angled polished brass footrest stops us in our tracks like a shining spotlight – demanding our attention through its luxury and the glow it adds to a room.
Sat atop these solid foundations, the soft fabric of the seat, cradled with the leather bound provide a rich combination of colour. This not only adds warmth to the piece, but a tactile sense of comfort and elegance. And if this isn’t enough, the way the designer weaves the vertical line detailing of the backrest into its softly curved structure again provides a sensuous play for the senses.
