The interior design of the high-end of mid-century glamour was defined by the delights of its sleek and neutral minimalism. It was the era of simple and bold statements made in the name of good taste, embodied by masters of the silver screen like Marilyn Monroe. The Vestry table lamp wouldn’t be at all out of place in a Hollywood mansion or a New York penthouse suite of the 1950s and yet it harbours tricks up its sleeve that make it quintessentially contemporary.
The base of this piece is formed of two delicately contrasting circular forms, one in polished brass and the central circle of black lacquer. Both of these are treated with a high gloss varnish that draws our eyes as much as the bold contrasting shapes do. Rising out of this monochrome base is a delicately thin tube of polished brass that reaches up to hold the lamp with a sense of weightlessness. Escaping this delicate form, the lampshade is emphasised by its scale in comparison to the base and forces us to delight upon its sleek beige satin finish. Concealed behind this delightfully luxurious material are four bright bulbs that make this piece a spectacularly bright addition to any room despite its light and minimal form.
