The Gage stool pulls off the remarkable job of pairing the harsh, roughness of the natural world, with the sophistication of the most luxurious of indoor settings. It’s a careful balancing act, that takes into account form, structure and choice of materials, to present a beautifully classic silhouette, with a modern leaning colour palette and design features. The bottom and upper halves are two sides of the same coin.
Two reflexing curved out cones, up ended and cropped about halfway upheld in stasis within a few inches of each other. But it’s the choice of aesthetics on these halves that really makes the Gage shine. Rough hand carved lines cascade up and down the length of both halves, creating a muted black on black tiger striped patterning. This texture draws the eye and pleases the senses. The top is formed from the same matte lacquered wood as the base and upper section, albeit without the carved indents to provide a luxuriously comfortable surface. An uninterrupted band of polished brass traverses the circumference providing a glowing resolution between the two halves. This is where sophistication is brought into the picture, in a blissful golden accompaniment to the dark rough companion pieces.
