Description
At the junction of the Blyde River and the Treur River, nature gifts us with one of the natural wonders of the world. In large holes created by underwater vortices, the natural world carves out a water-filled canyon that becomes a spectacle of lines, colours and shining surfaces. The Blinky Rug is a handmade natural spectacle unto itself, formed of a unique and luminous geometric patterns it offers itself as a modern interior design take on the organic textures of the river.
Upon first sight it would be easy to imagine that this rug was inspired by the worlds of modernist architecture with its striking lines, rather than the natural world and its free-wheeling majesty. However, these strong geometric lines are imbued with significance through the material choices that the designers have made. The hand-tufted surfaces are formed with ultra-thin viscose made extremely soft, almost silk-like bamboo that gives the piece luxuriously elegant and velvety surface appearance. The modernist appearance of the piece then becomes a natural wonder in itself as it is the result of focused hand-craft and carefully acquired earthly materials. However, this is not to say that the piece isn’t an extraordinary contemporary centrepiece.
