Description
How many elements does an object have to possess, to be considered beautiful? It’s often thought that beauty lies in complexity. That difficulty of design and the eventual result is what make something beautiful. But perhaps unnecessary adornments, and pointless design features are really just a disguise. After all if you can be beautiful with less effort, then should you not? The Portland desk needs one single element to be beautiful. One large, contorted, perfectly clear panel of glass. That’s all this is. But it’s also so much more. The glass panel is thin and sleek, and somehow, despite its simplicity, screams luxury.
It’s the way in which it has been worked that provides all of this pieces elegance and charm. And the journey this desk and this single panel of this single material take is extraordinary. From the conservative to the unknown in one movement. Let’s begin with the more conventional side. The thin glass paneling shoots up straight from the ground hitting the desktop at a right angle. The desk top is long, deep and flawless but by the time you arrive at the other end, the desk begins to taper at an angle, before plummeting towards the ground by way of some deceptively complex geometry. This is the feature piece of the Portland and this is why it shines so brightly.
